Perplexity Plans Its Own IPO in 2028, Independent of OpenAI and Anthropic

AI-powered search engine Perplexity has confirmed it is targeting an initial public offering in 2028, regardless of what happens with the competing IPO filings from OpenAI and Anthropic. CEO Aravind Srinivas made the comments directly to CNBC on June 9, 2026, underscoring the company's confidence in its own trajectory.

"We're not waiting to see who wins," Srinivas stated, signalling that Perplexity views itself as a distinct proposition from the language model-centric businesses of its rivals. The company is focused on its own growth path, building a next-generation search experience powered by AI that directly competes with Google Search.

Perplexity has grown rapidly over the past two years, gaining tens of millions of users for its conversational, citation-backed search interface. Unlike ChatGPT or Claude, Perplexity has positioned itself primarily as a search tool rather than a general-purpose AI assistant, which has helped it carve out a unique market niche.

The 2028 timeline means Perplexity is taking a more measured approach compared to OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which are rushing to capitalise on the current wave of investor enthusiasm for AI companies. This approach may give Perplexity more time to scale its revenue and solidify its position before facing the scrutiny of public markets.

With OpenAI aiming for a $1 trillion valuation and SpaceX already oversubscribed, 2026 and 2027 will be busy years for AI-related IPOs. Perplexity's 2028 target positions it to go public once the dust settles and market conditions can be evaluated more clearly.
