Google Upgrades Search With Gemini 3.5 Flash: A New Era of AI-Powered Search

Google has announced a sweeping upgrade to its search engine, powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash — the company's newest and most capable Flash model. The update was announced at Google I/O 2026 and marks what Google is calling the biggest transformation to Search in over 25 years.

Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the default AI model powering Google's AI Mode in Search, available globally in nearly 200 countries across 98 languages, and free for all users without a subscription. The model delivers strong performance for agents, coding assistance, and complex multi-step queries.

A key feature of the new experience is Personal Intelligence in AI Mode, which allows Search to draw on personal context — such as your emails, calendar, and preferences — to deliver more relevant, personalised answers. This represents a significant shift toward agentic AI, where Search can proactively complete tasks on your behalf rather than simply returning a list of links.

Google has also introduced a new AI-powered Search box, replacing the traditional search bar with an intelligent interface capable of handling natural language queries, multi-modal inputs, and complex questions that would previously require multiple searches.

The update positions Google to compete more aggressively with conversational AI products from OpenAI and Perplexity, both of which have been eroding Google's dominance in information search.
